EASA Publishes Air Taxi Noise Assessment Proposal
In an exciting leap towards harmonious urban air mobility, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has revealed a proposal to govern noise emissions from air taxis. The initiative, known as the Environmental Protection Technical Specifications (EPTS), focuses on eVTOL aircraft powered by an array of non-tilting rotors. Born from the need to form new standards for emerging technologies, the EPTS brings us a step closer to quieter skies.
The initiative followed a 2021 Europe-wide survey which revealed noise as a significant worry concerning air taxis, besides environmental and safety issues. To address these concerns, the EPTS proposes ways to measure noise and sets limits to contain noise pollution.
EASA has currently set noise limits equivalent to those for heavy helicopters and plans to refine these norms with more data. With eVTOL aircraft under the EPTS not contributing to engine emissions, such guidelines have been excluded from the proposal. The EPTS is now open for public review until June 15, 2023, welcoming all to partake in envisioning a future of serene skies.
